Is WhatsApp Encrypted? What's Private and What Isn't (2026)
Part of: Is it encrypted? The app-by-app guideCredit where it's due: WhatsApp did something remarkable in 2016. It switched on end-to-end encryption for every chat, for every user, by default, and most of the world never noticed. Overnight, more than a billion people got the kind of protection that once needed a computer science degree.
So the short answer is yes. The longer answer is where it gets interesting, because "your messages are encrypted" is not the same as "nothing about you is visible", and in 2026 WhatsApp is also, increasingly, an advertising surface.
Short answer: Personal messages, group chats, voice and video calls, photos and files on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted by default. Not covered by that promise: your chat backups (unless you switch on encrypted backups), metadata (who you talk to and when), and the Updates tab, which now carries ads.
Is WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted?
Yes. WhatsApp end-to-end encrypts personal messages, group chats, voice and video calls, photos, videos, voice notes and documents by default, with no setting to switch on. Only the people in the chat hold the keys, so WhatsApp, owned by Meta, says it cannot read or listen to them. It uses the Signal Protocol, designed by the team behind the Signal app.
You can check a specific chat: tap the contact's name, then Encryption, and compare the security code (or scan the QR code) with your contact in person.
Who can see my WhatsApp messages?
Only the people in the conversation can read the content, provided their phones aren't compromised and nobody in the chat shares it. WhatsApp can't read end-to-end encrypted messages, but it can see account details and some metadata. The weak points are usually unlocked phones, unencrypted backups, and people who screenshot or forward.
Think of WhatsApp's encryption as an armoured van. It is excellent on the road. It does nothing about what happens once the parcel is delivered and left on the kitchen table, which is where most leaks actually happen.
What can WhatsApp see?
WhatsApp can see information needed to run the service, such as your phone number, profile details, when you were last active, device and connection information, and, according to its privacy policy, usage and log data. It doesn't see message content. This "metadata" can still reveal patterns, like who you talk to and how often.
WhatsApp's privacy policy is the authoritative list; it is worth ten minutes of anyone's evening. Two practical notes:
- Business chats are different. When you message a business, WhatsApp says some businesses use other companies, including Meta, to store and reply to messages. The chat shows a notice when that's the case.
- Meta AI chats are different. Messages you send to Meta AI go to Meta's AI, not to a friend. Meta announced in October 2025 that, from 16 December 2025, conversations with Meta AI would be used to personalise ads and content, with the EU, the UK and South Korea exempt for now (The Register).
Are WhatsApp backups encrypted?
Not automatically. Chat backups to iCloud or Google Drive are only end-to-end encrypted if you switch on End-to-end encrypted backup (Settings > Chats > Chat backup) and set a password or a 64-digit key. WhatsApp announced this option in September 2021 (Meta Engineering). Without it, your backup is protected by the cloud provider's encryption, not yours.
This is the single most useful setting most people have never touched. If you keep one thing from this article, keep this: turn on encrypted backups, and write the password somewhere safe. Lose it, and the backup can't be recovered by anyone, including WhatsApp. That is the point.
Does WhatsApp have ads now?
Yes, but not in your chats. WhatsApp announced ads in the Updates tab in June 2025: ads in Status, promoted Channels and channel subscriptions (MacRumors, June 2025). In February 2026 it said Status ads and promoted Channels were "now rolling out worldwide" (Storyboard18). Personal chats stay ad-free and encrypted.
Reports say users can hide or block ads from specific businesses, and that in some regions, including parts of Europe, people may be able to subscribe to remove ads from Status and Channels.
Nobody is being sneaky here; WhatsApp announced it openly. But it is a useful reminder that a free app is paid for somehow, and the "somehow" tends to grow over time.
Is WhatsApp safe for sending private photos?
The photo is end-to-end encrypted while it travels. The risks come after: it saves to the recipient's gallery by default, may be backed up unencrypted to the cloud, and can be screenshotted or forwarded. For sensitive images, use View once, switch off media auto-save, and turn on encrypted backups.
A quick privacy routine for families (menu names vary a little between Android, iPhone and app versions):
- Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup: on.
- Settings > Chats > Media visibility (on iPhone, "Save to Photos"): off, so images don't spill into your gallery and its own cloud backup.
- Disappearing messages for sensitive groups (Settings > Privacy > Default message timer).
- Two-step verification with a PIN (Settings > Account), so nobody can register your number on another phone.
- Chat Lock for the conversations that would hurt most if someone picked up your unlocked phone.

Is WhatsApp the most secure messaging app?
WhatsApp's message encryption is strong and on by default, which puts it near the top for most people. Privacy specialists often rank Signal higher because it is run by a non-profit, collects far less metadata and carries no ads. The best choice depends on what you need to protect: content, metadata, or both.
What WhatsApp doesn't try to be
WhatsApp is a messenger with a status feature, not a social network. There is no public profile you can grow, no feed of friends' posts you can scroll and reply to in threads, no place for a community to talk in public as well as in private. For that, most families still bounce between three or four apps, each with a different privacy story.
That fragmentation is the problem Nadeemi sets out to solve: one place for the feed and the private conversations, with a plain page on what we can and can't see.
FAQ
Is WhatsApp really end-to-end encrypted? Yes, for personal messages, groups, calls and media, by default. You can verify a chat's security code under the contact's info > Encryption.
Can WhatsApp read my messages? Not end-to-end encrypted ones. It can see account information and metadata such as when you're active and who you contact, as described in its privacy policy.
Are WhatsApp group chats encrypted? Yes, end-to-end, by default, for all members.
Are WhatsApp backups encrypted? Only if you switch on end-to-end encrypted backup. Otherwise your iCloud or Google Drive backup relies on the cloud provider's encryption.

Is there an ad-free social network with encrypted private chats? Nadeemi's public beta is open now: no ads, no AI features, no phone number, and private chats encrypted on your device with MLS, labelled "end-to-end encryption coming" until an independent audit is published.
