Is it encrypted? The app-by-app guide

Last checked:

"Is it encrypted?" sounds like a yes-or-no question. It almost never is. Most apps encrypt something: your connection, their servers, one kind of chat but not another. The question that matters is narrower and sharper: can the company itself read this conversation? If the answer is "no, the keys live only on our devices", that is end-to-end encryption. Anything else is a promise, not a lock.

This desk answers that question app by app. Every guide carries a "Checked on" date at the top, because these facts move: in 2026 alone Instagram removed its encrypted DMs, X moved its chats into a separate app, Discord encrypted every call and WhatsApp put ads in its Updates tab.

The one-minute version (checked 5 Nov 2026): WhatsApp encrypts personal chats, groups and calls by default. Messenger encrypts personal chats and calls by default. Telegram encrypts only Secret Chats (one-to-one, opt-in) and calls; groups are not end-to-end encrypted. Instagram DMs have not been end-to-end encrypted since 8 May 2026.

How to read these guides

Each guide answers the questions people actually type, in the order they type them: is it encrypted by default, what about groups, can the company read it, what about backups, and what to do instead. Each ends with a short FAQ and a list of sources with dates. Where we could not find an official statement, we say so rather than guess.

Three questions that work on any app

  1. Who holds the keys? If the company can restore your chats on a new phone without anything you saved, it can probably read them.
  2. Does it cover groups? Many apps encrypt one-to-one chats and quietly leave groups in the cloud.
  3. What about the backup? An encrypted chat backed up to an unencrypted cloud is only as private as the cloud.

We build Nadeemi, so we are not neutral, and we say so on every page. Our own private messages and Circles are encrypted on your device with MLS, but we label them "end-to-end encryption coming" until an independent audit is published. See what we can and can't see.
