Who Can See My WhatsApp Messages? Everyone Who Might, and How to Check
Part of: Is it encrypted? The app-by-app guideChecked against WhatsApp's security and privacy pages, Meta's own announcements and dated reporting.
"Who can see my WhatsApp messages?" is usually typed at night, by someone who has just had an uncomfortable thought. Maybe a colleague mentioned WhatsApp Web on the office computer. Maybe the phone was out of sight for an hour. Maybe it was simply a news headline about Meta and ads.
The reassuring part first: the message itself is end-to-end encrypted, so Meta cannot read it in transit or on its servers. The less reassuring part: encryption protects the journey, not the destinations. A WhatsApp message lives on at least two phones, possibly several linked computers, perhaps a cloud backup, and in the memory of everyone in the chat. This guide walks through every one of them.
Short answer: WhatsApp encrypts personal messages, group chats and calls end to end by default, so Meta cannot read their content. The people who can are: everyone in the chat, anyone using a linked device or an unlocked phone, anyone with access to an unencrypted backup, and WhatsApp itself for messages you report. Meta can also see metadata (who, when, how often) and processes what you type to Meta AI.
Can WhatsApp or Meta read my messages?
Not the content of your personal chats. WhatsApp says personal messages, group chats and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default, with keys that exist only on the devices in the conversation. Meta can't read them in transit or on its servers. It can see account information and metadata, and the content of chats you report or send to Meta AI.
The precise phrase matters: end to end means the message is locked on your phone and only unlocked on the recipient's. In between, Meta handles a sealed envelope (WhatsApp security).
Who else can see my WhatsApp messages?
Six realistic answers, in order of how often they matter:
- The people in the chat. Obvious, but it is the most common way messages escape: forwards, screenshots, a phone handed to a cousin. View once photos block screenshots in the app, yet a second phone can still photograph the screen.
- Anyone with your unlocked phone. Encryption ends where the screen begins. A phone without a lock, or with a code everyone knows, is an open diary.
- Linked devices. WhatsApp Web and the desktop apps show your chats on a computer. Anyone sitting at a computer you linked, and forgot to log out of, can read along.
- Backups. Chat backups to Google Drive or iCloud are a separate copy. They are end-to-end encrypted only if you switched on end-to-end encrypted backup (available since 2021) (Meta Engineering, 10 Sept 2021).
- WhatsApp, when you report. Reporting a chat sends WhatsApp recent messages from it (WhatsApp's help centre says the last five), so its team can review them. The other person is not told.
- Meta AI. Asking Meta AI something is a conversation with Meta's computers, not with a person; see below.
How do I check if someone is reading my WhatsApp on another device?
Open WhatsApp > Settings (or the ⋮ menu on Android) > Linked devices. Every computer or tablet linked to your account is listed with when it was last active. Tap any device you don't recognise and choose Log out. Then set a screen lock on your phone, so nobody can quietly link a new one.
Also worth a minute: turn on two-step verification in Settings > Account, which adds a PIN when your number is registered on a new phone.
Can Meta see my WhatsApp backups?
Only if they are unencrypted. A normal backup to Google Drive or iCloud is protected by that cloud provider's security, not by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. Since 2021 you can turn on end-to-end encrypted backup, locked with a password or a 64-digit key that neither WhatsApp nor the cloud provider has.
Find it in Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup. Store the password safely: if you lose it, the backup is gone.
What does WhatsApp know about me, if not my messages?
Metadata and account data. WhatsApp's privacy policy describes collecting account information (such as your phone number and profile), usage and log information, and device and connection information, including IP address. Encryption hides what you said, not that you said it, to whom, when and how often.
Since 2025 there is a commercial layer too. Ads appear in WhatsApp's Updates tab (Status and promoted Channels), rolled out globally in February 2026, and targeted with limited information such as your country or city, language and the channels you follow. Meta says personal messages are not used to target them (Storyboard18, 27 Feb 2026).
Are my chats with Meta AI private?
Treat them as a different kind of conversation. A question to Meta AI goes to Meta's systems so they can answer it. Meta announced that from 16 December 2025 interactions with its AI could be used to personalise ads and content, with exceptions in some regions at the time (The Register, 1 Oct 2025).
Meta has also built "Private Processing" for some AI features, announced in April 2025, which runs requests in isolated hardware it says Meta cannot read (Engadget, 29 Apr 2025), and in May 2026 an "Incognito Chat" mode with Meta AI, rolling out gradually (Khaleej Times, May 2026). The safe habit: don't tell any AI assistant what you would not tell the company that runs it.
Can the police or my employer read my WhatsApp?
Not by asking WhatsApp for the content of encrypted chats, which it does not have. Account data and metadata are a different matter and, like on most platforms, can be requested through legal process. In practice the bigger risk is the device: a work-managed phone, or a seized unlocked one, shows whatever is on the screen.
If your employer manages your phone, assume they may be able to see what is on it, and keep personal conversations on a personal device.
A five-minute WhatsApp privacy check
| Check | Where (menu names vary by version) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Linked devices | Settings > Linked devices | Log out anything you don't recognise |
| Two-step verification | Settings > Account | Stops someone re-registering your number |
| Encrypted backup | Settings > Chats > Chat backup | Your backup is otherwise outside E2EE |
| Disappearing messages | Chat info > Disappearing messages | Less history to leak later |
| Screen lock | Phone settings (and Settings > Privacy in WhatsApp) | Encryption ends at an unlocked screen |
| Accounts Center link | Settings > Accounts Center | Unlinking limits ad data shared with other Meta apps |
FAQ
Can Meta read my WhatsApp messages? Not the content of personal chats, groups or calls, which are end-to-end encrypted by default. Meta can see metadata, reported messages and what you send to Meta AI.
Can someone read my WhatsApp from another phone? Not without access to your account. Check Settings > Linked devices for computers or tablets, and turn on two-step verification.
Are WhatsApp backups encrypted? Only end to end if you turn on end-to-end encrypted backup. Otherwise the backup relies on Google Drive or iCloud security.
Does WhatsApp read my messages to show ads? Meta says no: ads appear only in the Updates tab and personal messages are not used to target them.
What does WhatsApp get when I report someone? Recent messages from that chat (the help centre says the last five), plus the account or group you reported.
Is there a messenger that doesn't need my phone number? Yes. Nadeemi needs only an email and a password, has no ads, and encrypts private messages on your device with MLS. We label it "end-to-end encryption coming" until an independent audit is published.
