Are Bluesky DMs End-to-End Encrypted? What Bluesky Can See, and the Germ Option

Part of: Is it encrypted? The app-by-app guide

Checked against Bluesky's own announcement and news reporting, 6 November 2026. Apps change; check the date.

Bluesky has grown into a real home for journalists, researchers and many people who left X. Its direct messages (DMs) are handy for a quick "can I quote you?". But before you send something sensitive, it helps to know exactly how private a Bluesky DM is.

Short answer: No. Bluesky's built-in DMs are not end-to-end encrypted. When DMs launched in May 2024, Bluesky said it intends to "fully support end-to-end encrypted messaging down the line", and that its moderation team may open DMs in rare cases to investigate abuse. We found no announcement of built-in end-to-end encryption as of 6 November 2026. For an encrypted chat with a Bluesky contact, people use Germ, a separate app that uses MLS and links to your Bluesky handle, or move to an end-to-end encrypted messenger such as Signal.

What Bluesky said about DM privacy

From Bluesky's own DM announcement (22 May 2024):

That is a clear, honest description, and it means: Bluesky DMs are protected in transit (HTTPS), but Bluesky the company can technically read them.

What is Germ?

Germ is a separate startup's messenger built for the AT Protocol (the network behind Bluesky). It uses MLS (Messaging Layer Security), the IETF standard for end-to-end encrypted group messaging, and lets you start a chat using your Bluesky handle instead of a phone number. Its beta began in July 2025. In February 2026 Bluesky added an experimental integration: Germ users can show a button on their Bluesky profile, and tapping it opens an encrypted chat.

Limits as reported: the integration started on iPhone (through an App Clip), Germ is a different app from a different company, and the encryption applies to Germ chats, not to Bluesky's own DM tab. Learn how MLS works in what is MLS encryption?

How to keep a Bluesky conversation private

  1. Treat Bluesky DMs like email at work: fine for logistics, not for secrets.
  2. Move sensitive talk to an end-to-end encrypted app. Germ if you both use iPhone and want to stay on your handles; Signal for anything that really matters.
  3. Limit who can DM you to people you follow (the chat settings let you pick everyone, people you follow, or no one).
  4. Don't send ID documents, passwords or medical details in any unencrypted DM.

Where Nadeemi fits

Nadeemi is the social app we build, so weigh this accordingly. Like Bluesky, it has public posts and follows; unlike Bluesky's own DM tab, its private messages, group chats and Circles are encrypted on your device with MLS, the same standard Germ uses. We still label them "end-to-end encryption coming" because no independent audit has been published yet, and we would rather undersell than overclaim. Public posts are public and readable by our server. Nadeemi works in Arabic and English, signs you up with an email and a password (no phone number), and has no ads and no AI features. Free beta, adults 18+.
