Is Messenger End-to-End Encrypted? Chats, Groups and Calls in 2026
Part of: Is it encrypted? The app-by-app guideChecked against Meta's own announcements and dated reporting.
Messenger is the odd middle child of Meta's apps. WhatsApp has been end-to-end encrypted for years. Instagram removed its optional encryption in May 2026. Messenger sits in between: encrypted by default for personal chats, with a few edges worth knowing about before you send something sensitive.
Short answer: yes for personal one-to-one chats and calls. Meta began making them end-to-end encrypted by default on 6 December 2023, with a rollout that took months. Chats with businesses and with Meta AI are different systems, and you should check the label inside any group chat before assuming it is covered.
Is Messenger end-to-end encrypted by default?
Yes, for personal messages and calls. On 6 December 2023 Meta announced it was "rolling out default end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls on Messenger and Facebook", warning the rollout to over a billion people would take "a number of months". Before that, encryption was an opt-in mode called Secret Conversations.
The same announcement added features that only exist inside encrypted chats, such as editing a message for up to 15 minutes and disappearing messages that last 24 hours (Meta, 6 Dec 2023).
Are Messenger group chats end-to-end encrypted?
Not automatically in every case. Meta's December 2023 default covered personal chats and calls; it did not name group chats. Encrypted group chats and calls have existed as an option since earlier tests, and coverage varies by chat. The reliable test is the chat itself: Messenger labels end-to-end encrypted conversations inside the thread.
We looked for an official Meta statement saying all group chats are end-to-end encrypted by default and did not find one as of 5 November 2026. If you find one, tell us at info@nadeemi.com and we will update this page. Until then, treat a group as encrypted only when the app says so in that group.
Can Meta read my Messenger messages?
Not the content of end-to-end encrypted chats, because the keys stay on the devices in the conversation. Meta can still see metadata, such as who you message and when. It can read chats that are not end-to-end encrypted, and anything you report, which sends recent messages to Meta for review.
Two details from Meta's own announcement are worth knowing:
- Edited messages: if an edited message is reported, Meta says it can see earlier versions.
- Message history: Messenger stores your encrypted history with a system Meta calls Secure Storage, and asks you to set a recovery method such as a PIN, so you can restore messages on a new device. Your PIN matters: treat it like a password.
Are Messenger calls encrypted?
Personal voice and video calls are included in the default end-to-end encryption Meta announced in December 2023. As with messages, the protection covers what is said, not the fact that a call happened, how long it lasted or who took part.
Are chats with Meta AI or businesses encrypted?
Treat them as not end-to-end encrypted. A chat with an AI assistant is a chat with the company's computers, so the company necessarily processes what you type. Business chats can be handled by the business's own tools. Meta also announced that, from 16 December 2025, conversations with Meta AI could be used to personalise ads and content.
That ad change came with exceptions for the EU, the UK and South Korea at the time of the announcement (The Register, 1 Oct 2025). Security researchers have also pointed out that words like "incognito" and "private" are marketing terms, while end-to-end encryption is a technical guarantee (Malwarebytes, 15 May 2026).
How does Messenger compare with WhatsApp and Instagram?
All three belong to Meta, but they now make different promises. WhatsApp encrypts personal chats, groups and calls by default. Messenger encrypts personal chats and calls by default. Instagram DMs are not end-to-end encrypted at all since 8 May 2026, when the optional feature was removed.
| Checked 5 Nov 2026 | Messenger | Instagram DMs | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 chats E2EE by default | Yes (rollout from Dec 2023) | Yes | No (removed 8 May 2026) |
| Group chats | Check the label in each group | Yes | No |
| Calls | Yes (personal calls) | Yes | No |
| Ads | Yes, in Meta's apps | In the Updates tab, not in chats | Yes |
| Phone number needed | No (Facebook account or email) | Yes | No |

How do I check whether a Messenger chat is encrypted?
Open the chat and look for Messenger's end-to-end encryption notice inside the conversation, then open the chat's settings to see its privacy and safety details. If you see no encryption notice in a group, assume it is not end-to-end encrypted and keep sensitive things out of it.
A practical checklist for any family chat:
- Check the label in the chat itself, not in a news story.
- Set a strong recovery PIN if Messenger asks for one.
- Keep passports, medical results and codes out of unlabelled groups.
- Remember metadata: encryption hides what you say, not that you said it.
FAQ
Is Facebook Messenger encrypted? Personal chats and calls are end-to-end encrypted by default since Meta's rollout began in December 2023. Business and Meta AI chats are different.
Are Messenger group chats encrypted? Check the label inside each group. Meta's December 2023 default named personal chats and calls; we found no official statement that every group is covered.
Can Facebook see my Messenger messages? Not the content of end-to-end encrypted chats. It can see metadata, chats without E2EE, and anything you report.
Do I still need Secret Conversations? For personal chats, encryption is now the default, so the separate opt-in mode matters much less than before.
Is Messenger safer than Instagram for private messages? Yes, in one specific way: Messenger's personal chats are end-to-end encrypted by default, while Instagram DMs have not been since 8 May 2026.
Is there a social network with encrypted groups and no ads? Nadeemi is built for that: private group chats and Circles encrypted on your device with MLS, no ads and no phone number. In the public beta we label them "end-to-end encryption coming" until an independent audit is published.
