End-to-End Encrypted Group Chats: Which Apps Really Lock the Whole Group in 2026
Part of: Encryption basics, without the jargonChecked against each app's own security pages and dated reporting, 6 November 2026.
A group chat is where the real stuff lives. The cousin's wedding plans, the scan results someone shares at midnight, the passport photo sent "just for the booking". One-to-one chats got most of the encryption headlines, but most of what families and friends say to each other is said in groups.
And groups are exactly where encryption gets harder, and where apps quietly make different choices. Some lock every group by default. Some lock only one-to-one chats. Some lock calls but not the text. This guide goes app by app, with the source for each answer.
Short answer: Signal and WhatsApp encrypt group chats end to end by default. iMessage does too, between Apple devices. Telegram groups are not end-to-end encrypted (only one-to-one Secret Chats and calls are). Discord encrypts calls but not group text. Messenger names personal chats in its default, so check the label in each group. Encrypted RCS between iPhone and Android (iOS 26.5, May 2026) uses MLS, but depends on carrier support. In every case, encryption hides content, not who is in the group.
What does "end-to-end encrypted group chat" mean?
It means every message in the group is locked on the sender's device and can only be unlocked on the devices of current members. The company running the app passes the messages along but holds no key to read them. When someone leaves, new messages are locked with fresh keys so the leaver can't read them.
That last part is the hard bit. With two people, there is one pair of keys. With 200 people who join, leave, change phones and add laptops, the keys have to be updated constantly without anyone, including the server, ever seeing them. Older designs handle this by layering group messaging on top of pairwise encryption. Newer ones, built on the MLS standard (RFC 9420, July 2023), were designed for groups from the start. Our MLS explainer shows how.
Which group chat apps are end-to-end encrypted?
| App | Group text E2EE? | Default? | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signal | Yes | Yes | Needs a phone number to sign up |
| Yes | Yes | Backups are not E2EE unless you switch it on; Meta sees metadata | |
| iMessage | Yes (Apple devices) | Yes | Groups with an Android phone fall back to RCS or SMS |
| RCS (iOS 26.5 + Google Messages) | Yes, with MLS | Yes, where supported | Both carriers must support the latest RCS; Apple calls it beta |
| Messenger | Check each group | Personal chats yes | Meta's default named personal chats and calls |
| Telegram | No | - | Groups are cloud chats; Secret Chats are one-to-one only |
| Discord | No (calls yes) | Calls yes | Text in servers and group DMs is not E2EE |
| No | - | E2EE DMs were removed on 8 May 2026 | |
| X Chat | Yes | Yes | Private keys are backed up on X's servers behind a 4-digit PIN |
Signal and WhatsApp
Both use the Signal Protocol, and both encrypt group messages by default. WhatsApp says personal messages, groups and calls are end-to-end encrypted (WhatsApp security). Signal groups can hold up to 1,000 members (MacRumors). The differences are elsewhere: who owns the app, what metadata it keeps, and how backups work. We compare them in Signal vs WhatsApp vs Telegram.
Telegram
Telegram's groups, up to 200,000 members, are cloud chats: encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers, but readable by Telegram. Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted, but only one-to-one. Group calls, up to 200 people, are end-to-end encrypted (Telegram FAQ). The full story is in Telegram group chat encryption.
Messenger, Instagram and Discord
Meta made personal Messenger chats and calls end-to-end encrypted by default from 6 December 2023 (Meta); we found no Meta statement that every group is covered, so look for the label inside each group (our Messenger guide). Instagram removed its optional encrypted DMs on 8 May 2026 (9to5Google). Discord encrypts every voice and video call except Stage channels, but says text is staying as it is (Discord, 18 May 2026).
iMessage and RCS
Apple describes iMessage content as end-to-end encrypted (Apple Platform Security). Since iOS 26.5 in May 2026, RCS messages between iPhone and Android can be end-to-end encrypted too, built on MLS, when both carriers support the latest RCS profile; look for the lock symbol (MacRumors, 11 May 2026).
Is a "private group" the same as an encrypted group?
No, and this is the most common mix-up. "Private" usually means the group is hidden or invite-only: strangers can't find it or read it. It says nothing about whether the company can. A private Telegram group or a private Facebook group can still be read by the company that runs it. "End-to-end encrypted" is a promise about the company, not about strangers.
The reverse is also true: an encrypted group with a careless member is not private. Anyone in the group can screenshot, forward or show their phone to someone else.
What can an encrypted group chat not hide?
Metadata. Even with perfect encryption, the service usually knows who is in the group, when messages are sent, roughly how big they are and which devices each member uses, because it has to deliver them. Encryption also stops at the screen: an unlocked phone, a linked laptop left signed in, or an unencrypted cloud backup can expose everything the encryption protected in transit.
How do I check if my group chat is end-to-end encrypted?
- Look inside the chat. Most apps that encrypt say so in the conversation itself or in the chat's info screen (WhatsApp, Messenger), or show a lock (RCS).
- Check the type of chat. On Telegram, only one-to-one Secret Chats are encrypted; any group is a cloud chat.
- Check backups. On WhatsApp, turn on end-to-end encrypted backup (Settings > Chats > Chat backup), or your cloud copy is outside the encryption.
- Check the members. Review the member list now and then. Encryption protects you from the company, not from the wrong person in the group.
How Nadeemi handles group chats
Nadeemi is a social network, so groups are the point: family Circles, friend groups, class chats. Private group chats and Circles are encrypted on members' devices with MLS (OpenMLS), and our server stores and forwards only ciphertext; it refuses messages that are not already encrypted. Because no independent expert has audited this yet, we label it "end-to-end encryption coming" and list exactly what our servers can still see, including group membership and timing, on What we can and can't see.
FAQ
Which messaging apps have end-to-end encrypted group chats by default? Signal and WhatsApp, and iMessage between Apple devices. Encrypted RCS between iPhone and Android is on by default where both carriers support it.
Are Telegram group chats end-to-end encrypted? No. Telegram groups are cloud chats that Telegram can read. Only one-to-one Secret Chats and voice or video calls are end-to-end encrypted.
Are Discord group DMs encrypted? Calls are end-to-end encrypted by default, but text messages in group DMs and servers are not.
Is a private group the same as an encrypted group? No. Private means strangers can't see it. End-to-end encrypted means the company running the app can't read it either.
Can people removed from an encrypted group read new messages? Not in a well-designed system. Keys are updated when members leave, so new messages are locked against them. Anything they saw before stays on their device.
Does Nadeemi encrypt group chats? Yes, private group chats and Circles are encrypted on your device with MLS. In the public beta we label them "end-to-end encryption coming" until an independent audit is published.
