Are Telegram Group Chats End-to-End Encrypted? What Your Group Really Protects

Part of: Is it encrypted? The app-by-app guide

Checked against Telegram's own FAQ, its public suggestions tracker and dated reporting.

Every family has one: the group chat. It started with the wedding planning, absorbed the school run, the cousin's new baby, a passport photo for the visa form and, at some point, a heated debate about whose turn it is to host Eid lunch. On Telegram, that group can grow to 200,000 members and sync instantly to every phone, tablet and laptop you own. It is a marvel of convenience.

It is also not end-to-end encrypted. Not partly, not optionally, not if you find the right setting. This guide explains what that means in practice, who can actually see what you write in a Telegram group, and what to do if your group has drifted from "pizza on Friday?" into territory you would rather keep to yourselves.

Short answer: No. Telegram classes every group chat as a "cloud chat", protected by server-client encryption: scrambled on the way to Telegram and on its servers, but readable by Telegram itself. End-to-end encryption exists only in Secret Chats (one-to-one, opt-in) and in calls, including group calls of up to 200 participants. There is no setting that makes a group text chat end-to-end encrypted.

Are Telegram group chats end-to-end encrypted?

No. Telegram's FAQ states that "server-client encryption is used in Cloud Chats (private and group chats)". That protects messages in transit and on Telegram's servers, but Telegram holds the keys. Secret Chats, the only end-to-end encrypted text mode, are limited to two people, so no group can use them.

The design is deliberate. Telegram stores group history in its cloud so that a new phone, a laptop or a member who joins late can load the conversation instantly. That convenience is only possible because the server can decrypt the messages to hand them to each device (Telegram FAQ).

Can Telegram read my group messages?

Technically, yes: Telegram stores cloud chats and holds the keys needed to deliver them. Its FAQ says the decryption keys are split into parts, kept apart from the data they protect, and spread across data centres run by "different legal entities spread across different jurisdictions", so that several court orders would be needed to force disclosure.

That is an arrangement of trust, not a mathematical guarantee. It may be a careful arrangement; it is still "trust us" rather than "we can't". End-to-end encryption is the difference between a locked safe whose key is in a vault in another country, and a safe whose key only you hold.

Who can see what I post in a Telegram group?

More people than most members assume. A rough map, from the inside out:

Does Telegram show my phone number in groups?

Not by default. Telegram's FAQ says you can message in private chats and groups "without making your phone number visible", and that by default your number is shown only to people who have you saved as a contact. You can tighten this in Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number. Your username and profile photo, however, are visible to the group.

Remember that you still needed a phone number to create the account. Telegram has it; the group just doesn't see it.

Are Telegram group calls encrypted?

Yes, and this is the exception that confuses people. Telegram's FAQ says calls are end-to-end encrypted and that any call can become a group call "with up to 200 participants", also protected by end-to-end encryption that you can verify. So a family video call can be end-to-end encrypted while the group text chat beside it is not.

The practical rule: on Telegram, say the sensitive thing on the call, not in the chat.

Will Telegram add encrypted group chats?

There is no announced plan. A request for end-to-end encrypted "Secret Group Chats" has sat on Telegram's public suggestions tracker since 28 January 2021 (bugs.telegram.org). Encrypting large groups well is genuinely hard: each new member and each departure changes who may read the next message.

That hard problem is precisely what the IETF's Messaging Layer Security standard (MLS, RFC 9420, July 2023) was designed to solve, keeping groups of thousands efficient by updating keys in a tree rather than one by one. Our MLS explainer has the plain-English version.

Does Telegram share group data with authorities?

Telegram changed its privacy policy in September 2024. It now says it may disclose the IP address and phone number of users suspected of crimes that break its rules, in response to valid legal orders, and report such disclosures in transparency reports (Security Affairs, 24 Sept 2024).

For ordinary families the lesson is not alarm; it is accuracy. Account data and cloud chats exist on Telegram's side and are subject to the law there, as on most platforms. Only end-to-end encrypted content is out of reach of everyone but the participants.

How can I make a Telegram group safer?

You cannot make it end-to-end encrypted, but you can make it smaller, tidier and less leaky:

  1. Make it private. A private group with an invite link you revoke after the family has joined is far better than a public one.
  2. Hide history from new members if the group's past contains things later joiners don't need.
  3. Hide your phone number in Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number, and choose who can add you to groups.
  4. Move the sensitive stuff out. Passports, medical results, bank details and one-time codes belong in an end-to-end encrypted one-to-one chat (a Telegram Secret Chat works) or not in chat at all.
  5. Use the call. Group calls are end-to-end encrypted; the chat is not.
  6. Prune the members. The group of 2019 probably contains people who are no longer in your life.

So should we leave Telegram?

Not necessarily. For public communities, broadcast channels and huge groups, Telegram is excellent at what it does. The mistake is assuming the family group enjoys the same protection as a Secret Chat. It does not. If your group exists to share children's photos, health news and the kind of jokes that only work among family, you want a place where the group itself is encrypted on the members' devices.

FAQ

Are Telegram groups end-to-end encrypted? No. All Telegram groups are cloud chats with server-client encryption, according to Telegram's FAQ. Telegram can technically access them.

Can I start a Secret Chat with a group on Telegram? No. Secret Chats work only between two people, on the devices where they were started.

Are Telegram group video calls encrypted? Yes. Telegram says calls, including group calls with up to 200 participants, are end-to-end encrypted and can be verified.

Can new members read old messages in a Telegram group? They can if the group shows chat history to new members. Admins can change this in the group settings.

Can people in a Telegram group see my phone number? Not by default. Only people who saved your number as a contact see it, and you can restrict it further in privacy settings.

Is there a group chat app with encrypted groups and no ads? Nadeemi is built for that: private group chats and Circles encrypted on your device with MLS, no ads and no phone number. In the public beta we label them "end-to-end encryption coming" until an independent audit is published.
