Social Media Apps Without a Phone Number: Which Ones Still Ask, and Why It Matters
Part of: Family privacy online: photos, children and quieter networksChecked against each app's own help pages and dated reporting, 6 November 2026.
Your phone number is the most reused identifier you own. It is printed on your bank's records, your mobile contract, your delivery apps and probably a few hundred contact lists you have never seen. When a social app makes it your login, every person you message, and every group you join, can end up holding a key that leads straight back to you.
That is why "social media without a phone number" keeps showing up in searches. Some people simply don't want to hand it over. Others share a family phone, change SIM cards when they travel, or don't want a group of 200 strangers to see their number. This guide checks which popular apps still require one, what a username really hides, and what to look for instead.
Short answer: WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal all still require a phone number to create an account in 2026. Telegram and Signal let you hide it behind a username once you are in, which helps, but the number stays tied to the account. Apps that sign you up with just an email (Discord, for example, and Nadeemi) never need your number at all.
Why do apps ask for your phone number?
Mostly for three reasons. A phone number is hard to create in bulk, so it slows down spam accounts. It lets the app find your contacts automatically, which makes a new network feel full on day one. And it is a simple account recovery method: a text message instead of a password reset.
All three are real benefits. The cost is that your account is now tied to an identifier that is easy to look up, hard to change, and shared with everyone in your address book.

A phone number is required, and it is your identity: everyone you chat with, and everyone in every group you are in, can see it. Meta says it won't sell your number or share it with advertisers, but since WhatsApp started showing ads in the Updates tab it uses data such as your country, city and language to pick them (Meta, 16 June 2025). More in our guide to who can see your WhatsApp messages.
Telegram
Telegram's FAQ says accounts can only be tied to a phone number. Once you are in, you can set a public username so people can contact you without knowing your number, and choose who can see the number in Privacy settings (Telegram FAQ). Remember that Telegram groups are not end-to-end encrypted: see are Telegram group chats encrypted?
Signal
Signal still needs a phone number to register. Since February 2024 you can create a username and hide your number from everyone, so new contacts never see it (TechCrunch). It is the best privacy option of the three, but the number is still part of the account.
Does a username really hide your number?
A username hides your number from the people you talk to. It does not remove it from the company, and it does not undo the past: anyone who already has your number in their contacts can still find you, depending on your settings. If your goal is "strangers in a big group shouldn't see my number", a username in Telegram or Signal does the job. If your goal is "this account should not be linked to my phone at all", only an app that never asks for the number can promise that. We compared six of them in a WhatsApp alternative without a phone number.
What to look for in a phone-free social app
- Email (or passkey) sign-up only. No hidden "verify your number" step later.
- Usernames, not contact lists. You choose who to follow; the app doesn't upload your address book.
- A real recovery method. Without SMS, you need recovery codes or a verified email, and you need to keep them safe.
- Encryption for private messages. Leaving out the phone number doesn't help much if the company can read your DMs.
- No ads. An app funded by targeting has a reason to collect everything else.
- Honest age rules and moderation. Phone numbers slow down spam; a phone-free app needs other defences, such as captchas and rate limits.
Why Nadeemi doesn't ask for your number
Nadeemi is a social network in Arabic and English: posts, follows, groups, private Circles and messages. You join with an email address and a password; there is no phone number anywhere in sign-up, and you find people by username or with an invite link instead of a contact upload. There are no ads and no AI features. Private messages and Circles are encrypted on your device with MLS in the beta; because no independent audit has been published yet, we label them "end-to-end encryption coming". Recovery uses your email plus recovery codes you keep yourself. Exactly what our servers can and can't see is on What we can and can't see.
FAQ
Can I use WhatsApp without a phone number? No. WhatsApp requires a phone number to register, and that number is visible to everyone you chat with and to every group you join.
Can I use Telegram without a phone number? Not to sign up: Telegram accounts are tied to a phone number. After that, a username lets people contact you without seeing the number, if your privacy settings allow it.
Does Signal still need a phone number in 2026? Yes, to register. Since February 2024 you can hide it behind a username so contacts don't see it.
Which social apps work with just an email? Discord signs you up with an email. Nadeemi uses an email and a password only, with invite links to find your people.
Is an app without a phone number anonymous? Not automatically. The company may still see your email, IP address and what you post publicly. Look for clear privacy pages that list exactly what is stored.
How do I recover an account without SMS? Through your email and, in apps that offer them, recovery codes. Store the codes somewhere safe offline.
