Nadeemi vs WhatsApp: an honest comparison of privacy, ads, phone numbers and groups
Part of: Family privacy online: photos, children and quieter networksWritten by the Nadeemi team, so read it with that in mind. Every fact about WhatsApp links to its source, and we say plainly where WhatsApp is stronger.
WhatsApp is the default chat app for billions of people, and for good reasons: it is fast, it works on almost any phone, and personal chats have been end-to-end encrypted by default for years. Nadeemi is something different: a small, independent social network in public beta, with a feed, groups, private Circles and chats, in Arabic and English. This page is for people deciding whether Nadeemi is worth trying next to WhatsApp, not instead of everything.
Short version: WhatsApp wins on reach and on mature, audited encryption. Nadeemi is for people who want no phone number, no ads anywhere and no AI features, plus a real feed and family Circles, and who accept a young beta whose encryption is labelled "coming" until an independent audit.

Is Nadeemi more private than WhatsApp?
Not proven yet. WhatsApp encrypts personal messages and calls end-to-end by default, and its design is mature. Nadeemi encrypts private chats on your device with MLS (RFC 9420), but no independent expert has audited it yet, so we label it "end-to-end encryption coming". Where Nadeemi is clearly different is what you hand over to join and what pays for it.
WhatsApp says personal messages, calls and statuses "remain end-to-end encrypted" and are not used for ads, while ads in the Updates tab use limited information such as country, city and language (Meta, 16 June 2025). Status ads and promoted channels went worldwide in February 2026 (Storyboard18, 27 Feb 2026). Nadeemi has no advertisers at all; members can pay into a voluntary honesty box.
Do I need a phone number?
For WhatsApp, yes: your account is your phone number. For Nadeemi, no. You join with an email, a password and your date of birth (adults 18+ only), and Nadeemi never asks to upload your contact book. That matters if you share a phone, change numbers often, or simply don't want your number to be your identity. More in WhatsApp alternatives without a phone number.
Disappearing messages and group chats
Both apps let you turn on disappearing messages per chat with the same three timers: 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days (MacRumors). In Nadeemi the setting travels inside the encrypted chat, each device deletes expired messages itself, and our server deletes its stored encrypted copy after the timer runs out. In group chats only admins can change it. On both apps, anyone can still take a screenshot.
Nadeemi group chats hold up to 50 people, with admins, @mentions, pinned messages and invite links that admins can revoke or set to expire. WhatsApp handles far bigger groups and communities. If you run a 500-person community chat, WhatsApp is the better tool today.
Where WhatsApp is stronger
- Everyone already has it. Nadeemi is new; you will need to invite your people.
- Audited, mature encryption and excellent voice and video calls.
- Native apps in every app store.
Where Nadeemi is different
- No phone number, no ads, no AI features.
- A real social network: a feed, follows, public groups, events and private Circles for family photos, in Arabic and English with a full right-to-left interface.
- Honest labels: we show exactly what our server can and can't see, including metadata such as who is in a chat and when messages are sent.
