How to Stop People Adding You to Group Chats: WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram and Signal
Part of: Is it encrypted? The app-by-app guideChecked against each app's own help pages and announcements, 6 November 2026. Menus move; check the date.
You open your phone and you are in a group called "CRYPTO SIGNALS VIP 💰" with 400 people you have never met. Or a cousin of a colleague has added you to a wedding group, and now your number is visible to all of them. Every big messaging app has a setting that decides who can add you to a group without asking. Most people never change it, because it is a few menus deep.
Short answer: WhatsApp: Settings > Privacy > Groups > "My contacts" or "My contacts except…" (pick everyone to block direct adds; people must then send you an invite). Telegram: Settings > Privacy and Security > Groups & Channels > "My Contacts" (or "Nobody" in current versions), with exceptions. Instagram: Settings > Messages and story replies > Message controls > Who can add you to groups > "Only people you follow". Signal: there is no switch, but a group from someone not in your contacts arrives as a message request you can accept, delete or block.
Why this matters more than it looks
- Your number leaks. In phone-number apps, everyone in a group can see the numbers of the people in it (WhatsApp usernames, rolling out since June 2026, help only with people who have not saved your number).
- Spam and scams live in groups: fake investment "signals", job scams, phishing links.
- You cannot leave unnoticed in some apps, and leaving does not remove what was already shared.
The setting in each app (checked 6 Nov 2026)
| App | Where | Options | What still gets through |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settings > Privacy > Groups | Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except… | An admin you blocked can't add you; others send a private invite (valid 3 days) | |
| Telegram | Settings > Privacy and Security > Groups & Channels | Everybody, My Contacts, Nobody (+ Always/Never allow lists) | Invite links people send you (you can ignore them) |
| Settings > Messages and story replies > Message controls > Who can add you to groups | Everyone on Instagram, Only people you follow | Groups from others go to Message Requests | |
| Signal | No setting | Groups from non-contacts arrive as a message request | Nothing is shown in your chats until you accept |

Go to Settings > Privacy > Groups. Choose My contacts so strangers cannot add you, or My contacts except… to exclude specific people. WhatsApp replaced an early "Nobody" option with "My contacts except…"; selecting all your contacts there works as "nobody can add me directly". When someone can't add you, WhatsApp asks them to send you a private invite in a one-to-one chat, which you can ignore; it expires after three days.
Telegram
Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Groups & Channels. Choose My Contacts (or Nobody in current versions) and add exceptions with Always allow / Never allow. Remember that Telegram groups are cloud chats Telegram can read, not end-to-end encrypted: see are Telegram group chats encrypted?
Go to your profile > menu > Messages and story replies > Message controls > Who can add you to groups, and pick Only people you follow. Group chats from other accounts land in Message Requests instead of your inbox. Blocked accounts can't add you at all.
Signal
Signal has no "who can add me" switch, but it doesn't need one as much: when someone who isn't in your contacts adds you to a group, you get a message request and can accept, delete or block before you see the conversation or can be messaged there.
Things no setting can fix
- Invite links. Anyone can paste a group link to you. Don't open links from strangers.
- People you already let in. If a contact keeps adding you to groups, use the exceptions list, or block.
- Numbers already shared. Once you have been in a group, its members may have saved your number. Changing the setting stops future adds only.
- Report, then leave. Report spam groups before leaving, so the app can act on them.
How Nadeemi handles it
Nadeemi is the app we build, so weigh this section accordingly. There is no phone number at all: you join with an email and a password, so a group never exposes a number. Who can add you to a group chat follows who may message you (everyone, people you follow, or nobody), and blocks always apply. People you don't follow arrive as message requests: you see who wrote, never what, until you accept, and they can't see that you opened it. Since 6 November 2026 you can also switch on request filters, which fold away requests that contain a link or come from accounts less than 24 hours old. Group chats and private messages are encrypted on your device with MLS in the beta; we label them "end-to-end encryption coming" until an independent audit is published.
FAQ
How do I stop being added to WhatsApp groups? Settings > Privacy > Groups, then choose "My contacts" or "My contacts except…". Selecting all contacts in "My contacts except…" means nobody can add you directly; they have to send an invite you can ignore.
Can I stop all Telegram group adds? Yes: Settings > Privacy and Security > Groups & Channels > Nobody (or My Contacts), with exceptions for people you trust. Invite links can still be sent to you.
Why was I added to a group by someone I don't know? Usually because your setting allows "Everyone" and your number or username was found in a leaked list or a public group. Change the setting, report the group, then leave.
Does leaving a group delete my number from it? No. Leaving stops new messages, but members who already saw your number may have it. Apps without phone numbers avoid this problem.
Can strangers add me to a Nadeemi group chat? Only if your "who may message me" setting allows them. Requests from people you don't follow wait until you accept, and filters can fold away requests with links or from brand-new accounts.
